Wonderful 'western style' ryokan located just next to the Heian
Shrine. Large towels and large rooms made for a very pleasant
stay. Manager speaks English. 90% foreign clientele.
They can fax you a map and other travel guides to the city.
Address: 89 Irie-Cho Ozazaki Sakyo-Ku. 10 minute walk to the
Handicraft Center - the largest Japanese souvenir shop we've seen in
Japan.

Approx Y5500 per person in twin per night (room only). Room are
small and
functional with tiny private bathroom. Hotel is basic, but rooms are
fairly
clean. It's fine if you don't plan to spend much time at the
hotel. It is
just 5 mins from the Heian Shrine and very convenient for all the
shrines
and temples on the eastern side of town a well as Gion, which is just a
5
minute taxi ride away. Entertainment district is also about 5-10
mins by
taxi or a 20 minute walk. Nearest subway station a 5 minute walk
away.
They don't speak much English but if you send them a fax (can't find the
number so you'll have to call and ask), they will understand written
English
and respond in English too. They provide an English map of where
the hotel
is.
- Ryokan Ohto Tel: 075-541-7803
Tatami rooms with or without private bathroom. Approx £4500 per person
no
meals included. This is a basic ryokan, clean and okay but they
don't lay out your futons
and put them away again during the day. Definitely a
"do-it-yourself" type
of ryokan, but cheap. Quiet location 5 mins walk from nearest
subway
station. This ryokan is a little further away from central Kyoto's
entertainment district etc, but is still within easy reach by subway,
bus or
bicycle.
