Using AvantGo with a firewall protected network

Step by Step Instructions and Comments  (you may want to print this out - read this before printing)

  1. Once you've setup an AvantGo account and have the MobileLink software on your machine, you'll need to configure an access for the so called Proxy Server.   A proxy server is a computer on your company's local network that limits access to other parts of the network or to an external network.

  2. Access an external website using your standard browser.  Try http://www.nytimes.com for instance.

  3. Some corporate networks may then ask you to enter a firewall access/crossing account and password.

  4. In the window that prompts you for your external access account and password (proxy authentication), you will see an IP address and a Port number.  Write those numbers down.  The IP address is something like 123.321.123.321.  The port address is the number that follows the IP address.

  5. If you don't see such a window, you will have to contact your computer support staff regarding information about the proxy server.   Proceed with step 6 below once you have your Proxy IP address info.

  6. From the Start menu, choose Programs, AvantGo, Mobile Link to start the Mobile Link application.

  7. Click the Configure Proxy button.   Then choose Manual.  Then choose to use HTTP proxy server

  8. On the next screen, enter the IP address you wrote down in step 3 in the Server name: field.
Note that the proxy server address may change on your work PC once in a while.  If your sync with AvantGo doesn't work, please recheck the proxy address as described above.

  9. Enter the Port number in the Port # field.

  10. Check the Use authentication box

  11. Enter your firewall/external web access account name and password and click next.

  12. It may test your access now.

  13. Go back to the Mobile Link main screen. If AvantGo.com isn't listed there then choose Add Server.

  14. In the server field type in: sync.avantgo.com and port 80.  Then enter your AvantGo login information.

  15. Click on Test Connection to make sure everything is working.

  16. AvantGo should download the requested web sites through your firewall on your next hot sink.
