Al's Hacks

A home for links to my recent hacks. The technologies used here are a mix of Perl, Ajax, Mashups, Yahoo and Google Mapping, Javascript, Greasemonkey, RSS, and XML. In the true spirit of Web 2.0, these concepts integrate disparate sources of data and APIs and modern browser capabilities to make something more useful than each part alone.
Music Mash New iPhone app which integrates an iTunes library, videos from YouTube, lyrics from LyricWiki and similar songs from LastFm. I wrote the iMusicMash backend in Perl and the front end uses the IUI javascript/css library. I recently mixed in photos from Yahoo's BOSS API and concert events from Eventful.com. The app is designed to look good on an iPhone or iTouch, but works in any brower. Send me an email if you'd like your iTunes library loaded.
Movie Mash 2nd place winner at Mashup Camp 6. Mashup of DVD-Play's movie kiosk content, Blockbuster's new movies, IMDb.com ratings, Kids-in-Mind movie ratings, and Yahoo Movies pages. DVD-Play's kiosks can be found in many Safeway markets near San Francisco Bay Area. This mashup lists the movies in descending order by IMBD rating. I wrote the iMovieMash backend in Perl and the front end uses the IUI javascript/css library. Designed to look good on an iPhone or iTouch, but works in any brower. Now also a Facebook App

LinkedIn - Bring Email address back to the header LinkedIn recently replaced the direct email link atop each Profile with a "Send a message" feature which directs the message through their LinkedIn servers. FogBugz 5.0 Open in Tabs+ For use with the FogBugz bug tracking and project management software. This hack is a Greasemonkey script which adds a Tabs link to the top and bottom of case list pages, when clicked, the script opens each case in a new tab. Also changes the Firefox tab title so it starts with the Fogbugz case number.
LinkedIn & Events Mashup Greasemonkey script that automatically adds icons and links for Eventful.com, WorkIt.com and Upcoming.com to the upper right corner of your LinkedIn pages.
Salesforce.com Cold Call News Greasemonkey script that adds links to Hoovers, Google, Yahoo, Technorati, YouTube and Wikipedia from any Salesforce.com Account page.
Lowest Price Groceries Concept I developed for Mashup Camp 2007. Mashes Yahoo Maps API and ficticious RSS feeds on products from your grocery list. Uses color coded markers to let you know which supermarket has the lowest price right now. You can change the product in the picklist up top. Wouldn't it be great if we could hack our vehicle's navigation unit. Maybe we can.
Google Books - Peninsula Library System mashup Greasemonkey script that instantly knows if that book you're glancing at on Google Books is available at the local library.
Web Page to Podcast Greasemonkey script that autodiscovers MP3 links as you browse and auto generates a Podcast RSS file you can import into a media player.
Accor Hotels in Australia & New Zealand Google Maps API mashup with Accor Hotels web pages, Flickr, Wikipedia, Youtube and others. If you have Google Earth loaded on you computer, click on this KML file and fly across Australia in 3D. Click on the play button after it loads.
Hiroshima Restaurants map Japan In Your Palm's restaurants on a Google Map. Includes link to a KML file at the bottom of the page, which can be used to see this in 3D on Google Earth.
Oslo Slideshow Ajax web experiment/slide show I wrote to show Flickr photos near my daily life on a recent trip to Norway.
