Japan offers a wide variety of wonderful dining experiences.  However, foreign visitors and even foreign residents share a common frustration when it comes to meal time....there are few English menus and English speaking staff to be found.  To aid you in your culinary adventure, we've created an online collection of over 50 restaurants in Hiroshima that your colleagues have enjoyed over the years.  With each restaurant, we provide upfront useful details about the restaurant, walking directions, GPS coordinates, useful tips, suggested dishes, and of course, full menus in English (along with the Japanese pronunciation).  The various restaurant themes tend to be similar throughout Japan, hence you can usually use the menus contained here anywhere in Japan.

Most of the restaurants included here are located in central downtown Hiroshima, somewhere in between the Hiroshima train station, Rihga Royal Hotel and Peace Boulevard.  All within about a 15 minute walk from the Tenmaya department store corner.

For true mobility, print out a few  restaurants' menus from this site, or better yet!, download the menus to your Palm Pilot^TM connected organizer, Visor^TM or Windows CE^TM PDA.  The language doesn't have to be a barrier to your culinary enjoyment in Japan anymore.  Just be careful not to spill food or drink on your Palm computer!  We find this to be especially challenging at a sushi bar.

This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list of every restaurant in Hiroshima (we wish we had the time, and the stomach!).  These are some of the more popular establishments among the foreign professional population in town.  Despite the short list, we can help you find anything from the freshest sushi to steak to omelets to sandwiches to pizza.  Hiroshima has it all.  You can even find bötchen (German rolls) at the local Andersen's bakery.  

Word on walking directions:  Each restaurant's page provides walking directions from the Rihga Royal Hotel or the Tenmaya department store corner (a popular meeting place).  From the downtown Ford building (Nisei Midori bldg), the Tenmaya corner is just out the front door and to the left at the major intersection.  Cross the streetcar line and you're at the Tenmaya corner.

Nice thing about Japanese restaurants.... the menus are fairly standard.  That is, you can probably find most of the items on the Sushi Tei menu we provide here at any sushi shop in Japan.  Same applies for Okonomiki and even Chinese restaurants
