Directions Find Tenmaya. Walk west along the main street (with the streetcars). Go past Fukuya department store and turn left into the covered shopping street. Take your first right, then your first left, and finally your first right. Jamaica is a few buildings down on your right. There is a large outdoor staircase leading down to the entrance of the bar. You can also just listen for the music.

Description As you're paying the entrance cover charge here you'll notice a large collection of signs in English stuck to the wall. As you read through the various rules you soon get the picture that this place attracts a lot of military people and they don't always behave. They must try to cut down on the troublemakers by charging a higher cover charge for "base people". If you come here early in the evening (before midnight), you'll be shocked and disappointed. This place is amazingly scary with the nasty walls and general grunge feel. If you were around when the "Old Mac Bar" was still around, the inside of Jamaica looks like the staircase in that condemned building Mac used to be located in. There are a few high tables around and a large open area for dancing. They have a strange rule that the 2 free drink coupons that you get as part of the cover charge can't be used for beer. I don't understand this as they charge the same 500 Yen for both mixed drinks and beer, but apparently there must be some logic to it. If you hang around until later the place gets super packed with people dancing and grooving to the loud dance sounds being pumped out. The atmosphere is completely different if show up here at 10:00 and see the walls, than if you show up at midnight and can only see a sea of people. If you like good dance music, a huge lively crowd, and lots of high-strung guys with short haircuts, this place can be fun. |
